Laphroaig 10 Review, Too Smoky For Beginners?

Laphroaig 10 Review, Too Smoky For Beginners?

August 24, 2026 /Posted byBishnupriya / 7 / 0

Laphroaig 10 Review: There are some whiskies that try to please everyone. They are smooth, sweet, easy to drink and unlikely to offend anybody.

Laphroaig 10 is not one of them.

The first time I experienced a whisky with this kind of profile, I understood why people either become obsessed with peated Scotch or immediately decide it is not for them. Laphroaig 10 has a personality that is impossible to ignore. It smells smoky, earthy, salty and medicinal. Depending on your palate, those flavours can be fascinating or completely overwhelming.

This 10-year-old Islay single malt is matured in ex-bourbon barrels and is built around Laphroaig’s unmistakable peat-heavy character. The result is a whisky where smoke is the main attraction, but there is much more happening underneath if you give it some time.

So, is Laphroaig 10 a good choice for beginners? In my opinion, it depends on what kind of beginner you are.

If you are completely new to whisky and prefer smooth, sweet flavours, this might be a difficult starting point. But if you are specifically curious about smoky and peated whisky, Laphroaig 10 is one of the most memorable introductions you can have.

Nose – Smoke Before Everything Else

You don’t need to put your nose too close to the glass to know what you are dealing with.

The smoke arrives first.

But Laphroaig’s smoke is different from the smell of a normal campfire. It has an earthy and medicinal quality that some people describe as iodine, antiseptic or seaweed. There is also a strong coastal character, almost like standing near the sea with smoke drifting through the air.

That might not sound particularly appealing on paper.

But give the whisky a few minutes in the glass and things start changing. Behind the peat, you may notice softer notes of vanilla, sweetness and citrus. Official Laphroaig tasting information highlights the combination of intense smoke with seaweed, salt and subtle sweetness, which describes the overall experience quite well.

This is one reason I wouldn’t recommend judging Laphroaig 10 after one quick smell.

Take your time with it.

The first impression can be aggressive, but the whisky becomes more interesting once your nose adjusts to the peat.

Taste – Smoky, Salty and Surprisingly Sweet

The palate is where Laphroaig 10 becomes truly divisive.

The first sip brings peat and smoke immediately. Then comes the salty, maritime character. Seaweed, brine and that famous medicinal note are difficult to miss.

For someone used to sweeter whiskies, this can feel strange.

You might be expecting honey, caramel and vanilla, but instead, Laphroaig gives you smoke, earth and the seaside.

However, it isn’t just a bottle of liquid smoke.

There is sweetness underneath the peat. Vanilla and softer fruity notes help balance the intensity, while the ex-bourbon casks contribute to the whisky’s smoother side. Reviewers have also noted that the fruit and sweetness become more noticeable as the initial peat intensity settles.

Personally, this balance is what makes Laphroaig 10 more interesting than simply drinking a whisky that is smoky for the sake of being smoky.

Every sip feels like a combination of two completely different worlds.

On one side, there is heavy peat, smoke and iodine.

On the other, there is sweetness, vanilla and a surprisingly soft malt character.

The Finish

The smoky character doesn’t disappear quickly.

After swallowing, the peat remains on the palate along with salt, spice and a slightly dry, medicinal character. The finish is one of the reasons why Laphroaig 10 leaves such a strong impression.

Even if you don’t enjoy your first sip, you’ll probably remember it.

And that is something I genuinely appreciate about this whisky. In a market filled with bottles that can sometimes feel similar, Laphroaig 10 has its own unmistakable identity.

You could probably blind taste it against many lighter single malts and immediately know that something very different is happening.

Is Laphroaig 10 Too Smoky for Beginners?

For a complete whisky beginner, yes, it can be.

Some reviewers specifically consider it too smoke-forward for newcomers, while others see it as an excellent introduction for someone who wants to explore peated Scotch. That difference of opinion actually explains Laphroaig perfectly: it is highly polarising.

I wouldn’t recommend buying a full bottle blindly if you have never tried smoky whisky before.

Instead, try a single pour at a good bar or share a bottle with someone. That is probably the safest way to discover whether this style works for you.

You may take one sip and think, “Why would anyone drink this?”

Or you may immediately want another.

There doesn’t seem to be much middle ground with Laphroaig.

How Should You Drink Laphroaig 10?

I would start with it neat.

Pour a small amount and don’t rush. Give it a few minutes in the glass before taking your first sip. The aroma can be intense initially, so spending some time with it makes a difference.

If the smoke feels too aggressive, add a few drops of water.

A small amount of water can help open up softer flavours and reveal more sweetness beneath the peat. Laphroaig itself also suggests that water can reveal additional layers, while ice creates a smoother and more relaxed experience.

I wouldn’t drown it in water, though.

The goal is not to remove the character of the whisky completely. The peat is the reason you’re drinking Laphroaig 10 in the first place.

Who Should Buy It?

I think Laphroaig 10 is a great choice for:

  • Whisky drinkers curious about Islay Scotch
  • People who enjoy smoky flavours in food
  • Fans of peated whisky
  • Drinkers looking for something completely different from sweet Speyside-style single malts
  • Anyone wanting to understand why Laphroaig has such a distinctive reputation

It may not be the best choice for someone who simply wants the smoothest possible first single malt.

If your priority is sweetness and easy drinking, starting with a lighter single malt may make more sense before jumping into Laphroaig’s intense peat profile.

But if you want to explore smoky whisky properly, I don’t think you should avoid it forever.

My Final Opinion

Laphroaig 10 is not an easy-going whisky, and honestly, it doesn’t try to be.

It is smoky, medicinal, salty, earthy and occasionally challenging. But underneath all that intensity is a surprising amount of balance and sweetness.

Would I recommend it as someone’s very first whisky? Probably not.

Would I recommend it as one of the first peated whiskies they should experience? Absolutely.

The best way to describe Laphroaig 10 is that it is a whisky with a strong personality. It won’t quietly sit in the background. It demands your attention.

And once you start understanding the flavours, that first shock of smoke can slowly turn into appreciation.

Rating: 8.8/10

Best for: Peat lovers and adventurous whisky drinkers
Not ideal for: Beginners who prefer smooth and sweet whisky
My recommendation: Try a small pour first before committing to a full bottle.
